Inositol is a sugar alcohol found in various foods such as cereals, corn, meat, citrus fruits, and legumes. It is often used as a medicine, typically taken orally in doses of 1-4 grams daily, sometimes combined with folic acid. As a sugar alcohol, inositol has half the sweetness of sucrose (table sugar). It was previously considered a B8 vitamin, but it is now known to be naturally produced in the human body from glucose, making it not a true vitamin.
